PLOS BLOGS The Official PLOS Blog

The Student Blog and Inside Knowledge

Three months ago, PLoS Blogs participated in a science writing experiment. Two journalism students at Stanford University wanted to start a new type of blog, one that focused less on the results of science, and more on the personalities involved. And we were delighted to bring them into our network.

This effort, Science, Upstream, was hugely successful. Jamie Hansen and Julia James, the blog authors, (in conjunction with science writer and lecturer Thomas Hayden) embedded themselves in the NatCap research organization for the past months and told the backstory of a large environmental project.

Today, we are happy to announce that another group of students will embark on a similar, yet distinct, journey. Anna Perman, Ben Good, Lizzie Crouch, and David Robertson – collectively known as Inside Knowledge – are launching their own channel on The Student Blog. Whereas Science, Upstream focused on the inner workings of a national research organization, Inside Knowledge will embed themselves in a lab, getting to know the members of Imperial College’s Blast group and seeing first-hand how their experiments are carried out.

In the coming days, I’ll be moving the Science, Upstream posts over to The Student Blog as well.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me [bmossop@plos.org].
