PLOS Stands with the National Academies on Continuing WHO Funding
Yesterday, the presidents of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released a statement warning that interrupting funding for World Health Organization (WHO) would be a critical failure for our global health security. PLOS stands with the assessment of our nation’s top scientists: this is not a time to turn inward, but to collaborate for immediate, robust and concentrated international action.
As the PLOS Medicine editors indicate in a perspective, the WHO is the only global health organization that has the tools to combat a pandemic of truly global consequences. To halt funding now would risk the lives of many who rely on the WHO’s essential services and debilitate our collective progress towards understanding the virus and curbing the impact of the pandemic.
